Establishing an Institute for Intelligent Infrastructure

Infrastructure has provided the path to increase commerce and trade for over 5,000 years. It has created trade routes by overcoming natural obstacles ranging from spanning rivers and gorges, to providing access by land (roads and railroads), sea (docks and ports) and air (airports) to places which we want to do business with.

Today, trade routes have become electronic. Broadband connectivity has created a new layer of infrastructure within the "Platform for Commerce."

Many educational institutions lag behind offering solutions to what is needed to solve today's, as well as tomorrow's, business problems tied to infrastructure. Traditional approaches and curricula at these organizations provide answers that do not satisfy today's questions. As I say in my book, "21st century problems cannot be solved with 20th century solutions."

There is also a need to restructure the various councils, university consortia and engineering associations dealing with infrastructure issues. They do not account for the convergence going on between real estate, infrastructure, technology (Smartphones, WiFi and DAS networks) and their impact on regional economic development.

The institute would focus on the next-generation issues and developmental concepts including the convergence of disciplines to address new complex challenges including job creation.

First Agree on a Common Definition
As I have stated before, regional economic development must be built upon a solid "Platform for Commerce." That Platform for Commerce must be a multi-layer infrastructure that supports all facets of business operations. In order to attract new businesses to the region, its infrastructure must be capable of supporting those new businesses and that includes mission critical applications.

In some cases, infrastructure is viewed as roads, bridges and railroads and nothing more. There needs to be a more comprehensive definition which is adopted by all. (See Chart)

A new multi-disciplinary institute must be established to handle new and complex endeavors. It must provide a pathway to new ideas and inter-related disciplines.

Rather than a narrowing consolidation of ideas and concepts, the Institute would focus more on the expansion and convergence of disciplines to advance the idea: infrastructure and regional economic development are interrelated.

What Needs to Be Established?
Education is a continual process rather than a degree/certificate program that concludes at the accomplishment of that particular program. If we apply that concept to education on infrastructure we can offer a better program for pragmatic learning and application of ideas.

What is needed is to establish priorities and

  1. Define Infrastructure (what is it comprised of).
  2. Define Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for establishing an ongoing organization.
  3. Develop Next-generation curricula for universities to educate the next-generation of planners and developers for global economic development.
  4. Consolidation and standardizations of terminology and definitions.
  5. Get buy-in to establish a common educational and practitioner set of objectives.
  6. Maintain and incorporate the advances and changes to the initial framework.

The first step has been taken. In writing Location Location Connectivity, I define the framework for looking at infrastructure in a more comprehensive way that fits the global commerce of the 21st century.

It was first accepted by the US Department of Homeland Security in a whitepaper entitled, "Intelligent Infrastructure: Securing Regional Sustainability" and was presented at their conference, "Workshop on Aging Infrastructure" at Columbia University in New York in 2009.

Part of my book is based on that initial framework. Within the book, I discuss

  • Master Planning (including Power & Network Infrastructures).
  • Smartphones and their impact on commercial real estate as well as retail commerce.
  • Adhering to Mission Critical design concepts for critical Business Applications.
  • Smart grid concepts.
  • Technology Procurement (RFPs)
  • Re-designing the Regulation of Municipal Initiatives.
  • Regional Economic Development.
  • Understanding the Internet of Things (IoT) and how it relates to the "Internet of Reality" (the in-place network infrastructure).
  • The Transformation to 5G Networks by 2020.
  • Redefining Education (FACT-based education where FACT stands for Flexibility, Adaptability, Creativity, and Technology skills)
  • And many more pragmatic concepts including a chapter on organizational leadership for the 21st century.

Now is the time to re-evaluate what is important to your organization's sustainability and viability for the future. The book covers a lot of areas but more importantly covers the convergence and growing inter-relationships of these areas (Real Estate, Infrastructure, Technology, and regional Economic Development).
